Team Nigeria signed off from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as Africa’s top-performing nation, winning 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals to finish with 24 medals overall.
Nigeria placed sixth on the final medal table, behind Australia, England, Canada, India and Scotland, but finished comfortably ahead of every other African nation.
The 10 gold medals represent one of Nigeria’s strongest Commonwealth Games performances in recent years, with the country excelling particularly in para powerlifting, weightlifting and athletics.
Nigeria’s Gold Medal Heroes
Nigeria opened its gold-medal account in spectacular fashion through para powerlifting, claiming three titles.
Esther Nworgu won the women’s lightweight event, while Folashade Oluwafemiayo dominated the women’s heavyweight category and set a world record with a 175kg lift.
Rilwan Idris completed Nigeria’s opening-day gold rush with victory in the men’s heavyweight division.
Weightlifting subsequently produced another three gold medals.
Edidiong Joseph Umoafia triumphed in the men’s 71kg category, while Onome Didih claimed the women’s 53kg title.
Rafiatu Folashade Lawal added the third weightlifting gold in the women’s 58kg category, producing a Games-record total of 229kg.
Athletics then provided four more gold medals.
Goodness Nwachukwu won the women’s para discus title with a world-record performance, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi captured gold in the men’s shot put.
Ezekiel Nathaniel secured victory in the men’s 400m hurdles before Samuel Ogazi delivered one of the defining moments of Nigeria’s campaign by winning the men’s 400m title in 44.25 seconds.
Ogazi’s triumph was historic, making him the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400m title.

Oji’s silver was particularly significant, as she became the first Nigerian woman since 2006 to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the shot put.
Usoro also produced a major improvement on her previous Commonwealth Games showing, taking silver in the long jump with a 6.87m effort.

Ajayi’s bronze ended Nigeria’s long wait for a Commonwealth Games men’s 100m medal, while Onojuvwevwo also ended a lengthy wait for a Nigerian women’s 400m medal.
The mixed 4x400m quartet of Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo rounded off Nigeria’s athletics medal collection.
