Team Nigeria’s impressive medal charge at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games gathered further momentum on Monday as Ruth Asuquo Nyong produced a determined performance to claim the silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, extending Nigeria’s remarkable run of podium finishes in Scotland.
Competing at the SEC Armadillo, Nyong displayed grit, composure and resilience to finish with a combined lift of 168kg, securing Team Nigeria’s seventh medal of the Games and further boosting the country’s growing confidence across multiple sports.

The Nigerian lifter began her campaign with a best lift of 75kg in the snatch, placing third after the opening discipline behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who lifted 85kg, and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry, who managed 77kg.
With the medals still hanging in the balance, Nyong rose to the occasion in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to finish with a total of 168kg. Her superb effort proved decisive, moving her ahead of Malaysia’s Henry, who finished just one kilogram behind on 167kg to settle for bronze.
India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom once again demonstrated her class, producing a dominant 190kg total to retain the gold medal while setting a new Commonwealth Games Record.
Nyong’s silver is another significant milestone for Team Nigeria, whose athletes have continued to make headlines since the opening days of the Games. Following an outstanding showing in para powerlifting, where Nigerian lifters delivered a haul of gold and silver medals, the country’s success has now extended to the weightlifting platform.
Her achievement also comes as the athletics programme gets underway, with several of Nigeria’s leading medal prospects preparing to begin their campaigns in Glasgow.
With momentum steadily building, Team Nigeria remains firmly on course to challenge the National Sports Commission’s ambitious medal target, as athletes continue to deliver inspiring performances across different disciplines.
Sports247 gathered that Nyong’s silver medal was warmly celebrated within the Nigerian camp, with teammates and officials applauding another outstanding performance that has strengthened Team Nigeria’s position on the medals table and further raised expectations for the remainder of the Games.
