Gateway United Pays Tribute to Rashidi Yekini, Thirteen Years After His Passing

Thirteen years after the death of Nigeria’s all-time top scorer, Rashidi Yekini, Gateway United Football Club has joined fans and family in honoring the enduring legacy of the iconic striker from Kwara State.

Yekini’s name goes beyond the pitch — he was a beacon of excellence and inspiration. His accomplishments continue to serve as a source of motivation for aspiring footballers across Nigeria.

Acting General Manager of Gateway United, Niyi Soleye, reflected on Yekini’s illustrious career and his memorable stint with the club in 2005.

“Yekini was more than just a prolific striker — he was a true gentleman, respected by opponents and beloved by teammates. His record 37 goals for the Super Eagles remain a shining tribute to his extraordinary skill and commitment,” Soleye said.

He described Yekini’s arrival at Gateway United as a defining moment for the club.

“I still remember that day vividly. Back then, I was the club secretary, and welcoming a legend like Yekini was an honor. He seamlessly integrated with the squad, boosting morale and energizing both players and supporters. His presence alone was uplifting.”

Although his death on May 4, 2012, under controversial circumstances was a great loss, Yekini’s influence remains deeply embedded in Nigerian football.

Before captivating audiences in Europe, Yekini made his mark locally with Shooting Stars and Abiola Babes. Known for his power, pace, and natural scoring instinct, he was a constant threat wherever he played.

In April 2005, he joined Gateway United alongside former national teammates Sani Abacha and Jude Edemba. Yekini made 26 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and leaving a legacy that still resonates.

He was buried in his hometown of Ira, Kwara State, at the age of 48. Though he is no longer with us, Rashidi Yekini’s status as a legend of Nigerian football remains unshakable — eternally remembered and revered.
