Gabriel Okon Appointed AFN Technical Director as Federation Unveils New Technical Committee

In a strategic move aimed at revitalizing athletics in Nigeria, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named veteran coach Gabriel Okon as its new Technical Director and head of the federation’s technical committee.

The announcement was made by AFN President Tonobok Okowa during the federation’s inaugural meeting, where he emphasized the importance of technical leadership in advancing Nigerian athletics on the global stage.

Okon takes over from Samuel Onikeku and is expected to bring his wealth of experience to bear in his new role. Joining him on the technical committee are respected figures in the athletics community, including Solomon Aliyu, Victor Okorie, Oluyomi Oladimeji Sule, Lekan Soetan, Fatima Yusuf, and Prof. Ken Anugweje.

President Okowa expressed confidence in the newly formed committee, noting that their combined expertise would drive the federation toward greater performance and innovation. He also assured that the AFN secretariat would provide full administrative backing to ensure the committee operates effectively.

The formation of the new technical committee marks a renewed push by the AFN to improve technical standards, talent development, and strategic planning in Nigerian athletics as the country prepares for upcoming international competitions.
