Former Golden Eaglets captain Samson Okikiola Tijani has opened another chapter in his European career after joining Slovak top-flight club FK Železiarne Podbrezová, with the 24-year-old midfielder seeking regular football and a stronger foothold in Nigeria’s senior national team.
Tijani completed a season-long loan move from Czech side Dukla Prague in September, with Podbrezová securing an option to sign him permanently on a two-year agreement.
The move represents another opportunity for a player who once emerged as one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects after captaining the Golden Eaglets at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil.
His performances at youth level helped launch a European career that began with Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg in 2020.
Tijani subsequently gained experience with FC Liefering, TSV Hartberg, Wolfsberger AC and Norwegian club Fredrikstad before moving to Dukla Prague in 2025.
He also featured for Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich in March 2022, gaining valuable exposure at the highest level of European club football.
Podbrezová general manager Miroslav Poliaček believes the Nigerian possesses qualities capable of strengthening the club’s midfield.
“He is a player at the ideal football age and represents a different type of player from what we have had in our squad,” Poliaček said, describing Tijani as a creative and dynamic midfielder.
“I believe he will fully demonstrate his qualities on the pitch and help the team.”
The midfielder has already begun adjusting to his new environment, featuring against Žilina and Skalica during September.
Importantly, Tijani is not entirely new to the Super Eagles. He has already earned three senior international appearances, making his latest move an opportunity to strengthen an existing connection rather than pursue a first invitation.
With Nigeria seeking greater consistency and competition in midfield, regular performances in Slovakia could help Tijani attract renewed attention from the national team’s technical crew.
For the former Golden Eaglets captain, the promise that took him to Europe remains. The challenge now is to turn that promise into sustained senior-level performances — and make a compelling case for another Super Eagles opportunity.
