Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu has outlined a renewed vision for Nigeria’s U20 boys, the Flying Eagles, as they officially resumed camping in Abuja ahead of the 2025 WAFU B U20 Boys Tournament scheduled to take place in Ghana from July 10 to 23.
With the tournament doubling as a crucial preparatory window for the FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile later this year, Zubairu has promised strategic adjustments—particularly in attack—as the seven-time African champions look to assert their dominance in the sub-regional competition.

“We are taking proactive measures to ensure that the challenges we encountered previously are addressed squarely,” Zubairu said. “My assistants and I are very much aware of the issues related to the team’s attacking prowess, and we are making concerted efforts to rectify the situation.”
Nigeria, two-time FIFA U20 World Cup runners-up, are one of four African nations qualified for the global showpiece in Chile, alongside South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt. The World Cup will run from September 27 to October 19.
Drawn in Group A, the Flying Eagles will open their WAFU B campaign against arch-rivals and hosts Ghana on July 10, before facing Benin Republic on July 13. Group B includes Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Togo.
Coach Zubairu emphasized the importance of the WAFU B Tournament not just for silverware but also for talent discovery: “The tournament in Ghana offers us a good window to showcase a few more players, and we will grab that opportunity with both hands.”
As the countdown to both the regional and global tournaments begins, the Flying Eagles are hoping to build a formidable squad capable of making a strong statement in Ghana—and ultimately, in Chile.
