‘First Accra, Then Cairo!’ — SSA Adeboye Rallies Nation as Nigeria Storms Ghana for Armwrestling Qualification Battle

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has charged Nigeria’s national armwrestling team to deliver in Accra as 25 athletes depart for the African Armwrestling Championship holding from May 1–2, 2026 in Ghana.

The championship serves as the official qualifier for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt, where a total of 84 medals — 28 gold, 28 silver, and 28 bronze — will be contested in the armwrestling event.

Adeboye, who served as LOC Chairman during the historic Abuja 2025 championship where Nigeria emerged first overall, reminded the team and the nation that qualification must come before ambition.

“We need to first be in Accra and do well before we start talking about Cairo.

Qualification is the priority, and that is why every one of us must support the team.”

He noted that Nigeria’s dominant performance in Abuja has raised the bar across Africa, with other nations now intensifying their preparations to challenge Nigeria’s position.

“After Abuja 2025, the world is watching Nigeria. That means we must be more focused and more determined to stay on top.”

The SSA also assured that his office is fully committed to supporting the team’s participation.

“From my office, we are doing everything possible to ensure that the team gets to Accra safely and is well supported. Our athletes deserve the best environment to perform.”

Selected from the best talents across the country, the Nigerian contingent heads into the competition with high expectations and strong belief, despite the growing competitiveness across the continent.

With qualification slots on the line and national pride at stake, Adeboye expressed confidence that the team will rise to the occasion once again.

“We believe in these athletes. They have what it takes to qualify and make Nigeria proud once again.”

As Nigeria heads into another defining moment in African armwrestling, the message is clear:
the journey to Cairo begins in Accra—and Team Nigeria must deliver.
