Football enthusiast Yisa Jamiu believes DR Congo’s impressive draw against Portugal deserves recognition but insists it should not be interpreted as evidence that the Central African nation is developing faster than Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with Sports247, Jamiu described DR Congo’s performance as a commendable display against one of the tournament favourites, praising the team’s organisation, discipline, and confidence throughout the encounter.
“DR Congo’s draw was impressive because Portugal were one of the favourites,” he said. “They showed organisation, discipline, and confidence, and they even created opportunities that could have won them the match.”
The result has prompted comparisons with Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal in a separate international friendly, with some observers questioning whether DR Congo has overtaken the Super Eagles in terms of progress. However, Jamiu believes such conclusions would be premature.
According to him, Nigeria remains one of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses, boasting a rich history of success on the continental and global stages.
He pointed to the Super Eagles’ consistent appearances at the FIFA World Cup and regular qualification for major international tournaments as evidence of the country’s enduring pedigree.
“Nigeria remains one of Africa’s strongest football nations, with a deeper history of World Cup appearances and consistent participation in major competitions,” he explained.
While acknowledging the positive signs in DR Congo’s recent performances, Jamiu stressed that sustained progress should be measured over an extended period rather than judged on the outcome of a single fixture.
“DR Congo have clearly shown improvement, but one match is not enough evidence to conclude that they are progressing faster than Nigeria,” he noted.
His comments reflect a broader view that international friendlies should be analysed within context, taking into account factors such as team selection, tactical objectives, and preparation.
Results in exhibition matches can provide useful insights, but they do not always offer a definitive measure of a team’s quality or long-term trajectory.
For Jamiu, the fairest assessment is that DR Congo’s draw against Portugal highlights encouraging development within their squad, while Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s leading football nations remains firmly intact.
He believes only consistent performances over time and success in competitive tournaments can truly determine which teams are making the greatest strides.
