The new format will mirror the structure of the recently expanded men’s World Cup, which also features 48 teams. This move is expected to increase participation and representation across more nations, reflecting the rapid development and growing popularity of the women’s game.
The Women’s World Cup previously expanded from 24 to 32 teams for the 2023 edition held in Australia and New Zealand — a tournament widely praised for its competitiveness and record-breaking viewership. The 2027 edition, set to be hosted by Brazil, will retain the 32-team format before the larger expansion takes effect in 2031.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly emphasized the organization’s commitment to elevating women’s football on and off the pitch. This expansion marks a significant step in that direction, offering more nations the opportunity to compete on the world stage and further strengthening the global appeal of the tournament.
