Rising Nigerian sprint star Favour Ekpekpe lit up the track at the South Atlantic Championships, clocking a blistering 20.69 seconds (+0.6) in the men’s 200m to set a new personal best and mark a significant milestone in his young career.
Competing for Carson-Newman University, the freshman athlete sliced nearly half a second off his previous personal best to register his first-ever wind-legal sub-21 second performance in the 200m.
The performance not only earned him the top spot in the heats but also established him as the fastest qualifier heading into the final.
Ekpekpe’s exceptional run put him ahead of his teammate, Amine Kasmi, who also impressed with a time of 20.94 seconds (-0.3), securing the second-fastest qualifying time.
With this performance, Ekpekpe continues to affirm his growing reputation as a force to be reckoned with in collegiate sprinting. As he prepares for the final, all eyes will be on the dynamic freshman to see if he can replicate or better his outstanding form.
The South Atlantic Championships have proven to be a breakout stage for Ekpekpe, and his latest feat underscores the depth of talent emerging from Nigeria’s sprinting ranks on the U.S. collegiate circuit.
