Former Super Eagles defender Juwon Oshaniwa has urged Kelechi Iheanacho to continue his career with Celtic, insisting the Scottish champions remain the ideal club for the Nigerian forward despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Iheanacho is currently without a club after Celtic opted not to activate the automatic one-year extension clause in his contract, sparking speculation over his next destination ahead of the new season.
However, Oshaniwa believes both the player and the club would benefit from reaching a fresh agreement that would keep the Super Eagles striker at Celtic Park.
“If I were Kelechi Iheanacho, I would do everything possible to remain at Celtic. I think the club suits him, and he suits the club as well,” Oshaniwa said.
The former Hearts and Ashdod defender praised Iheanacho’s performances during his time in Scotland, noting that the striker showed enough quality to justify a longer stay despite the contract situation.
Oshaniwa also pointed to Celtic’s style of play and the club’s regular participation in European competitions as important factors that could help the 28-year-old rediscover his best form.
“He has settled into the environment, and I believe staying at Celtic would give him the stability he needs to continue playing at a high level,” he added.
Iheanacho, who has enjoyed spells with Manchester City, Leicester City and Sevilla, remains one of Nigeria’s most experienced forwards, having won the FIFA U-17 World Cup with the Golden Eaglets in 2013 before becoming a regular for the Super Eagles.
The striker’s club future continues to attract attention during the summer transfer window, with discussions over his next move expected to continue as preparations for the new European season gather pace.
