This call was made ahead of the burials of two former players, Henry Onyemanze Nwosu and Ramson Madu, who he described as legendary sons of his land.
Madumere, who spoke in separate condolence visits to the families of both late former players and gave financial assistance ahead of their burials, also advocated for employment opportunities from all levels of government for ex-internationals.
During the visits to the homes of both Imo State indigenes in Umuorie Naze and World Bank Road areas respectively, Madumere said he had a long-standing personal relationship with Nwosu, who he eulogized as a national icon whose legacy represents unity.
He stated, “I learnt about the passing of our brother, Henry Nwosu, and I decided, because of our personal relationship, to pay a condolence visit. His loss is not for the family alone but for all Nigerians. What he represents is unity in sports.”
Madumere disclosed further that he was compelled by friendship with Madu and shared sporting passion to visit the bereaved family and offer encouragement to the widow, Chioma Madu and four children, urging them to remain steadfast in faith.
The former deputy governor revealed, “I came with my entourage to visit the family of Coach Ramson Madu. When I heard of his demise, I decided it would not be out of place to come and show love and commiserate with the family.
“Government should recognise sports heroes while they are alive with a structured welfare, insurance scheme and medical support for retired athletes. This can be institutionalised so that those who served the country are taken care of in old age.”
Sports247 reports that, while the burial of Nwosu is scheduled for June 6th in Naze, Madu will be committed to mother earth on June 24th, ahead of which both families expressed appreciation for Madumere’s visit and support.
