EuroMatch NPFL: Inter Lagos Hit With 3-Point, 3-Goal Deduction Over Match Officials’ Assault

Inter Lagos have been hit with a three-point and three-goal deduction after being sanctioned for breaching the EuroMatch NPFL Framework & Rules during their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Sports247 reports that the Lagos-based club was found guilty of multiple offences arising from incidents that followed the league encounter, including inadequate security, failure to control officials and supporters, the prolonged detention of match officials and the assault of the first assistant referee.

According to the disciplinary ruling, Inter Lagos failed to provide adequate and effective security for the fixture, allowing unauthorised persons to gain access to restricted areas and subsequently attack match officials as they made their way from the dressing room to their vehicle.

The club was also found to have failed in ensuring the proper conduct of its officials and supporters, resulting in the match officials being held hostage for more than an hour after the conclusion of the game.

The disciplinary body further accused Inter Lagos officials, alongside some supporters, of intimidating, harassing and verbally abusing the match officials in acts deemed capable of bringing the game into disrepute.

The most serious allegation involved the physical assault of the match officials.

The club’s team manager, together with some supporters, was reported to have assaulted the officials, with the first assistant referee sustaining an injury to his face. The official also reportedly lost personal belongings, while his mobile phone was damaged during the incident.

As part of the sanctions, Inter Lagos have been fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security during the match.

The club was handed another ₦1 million fine for allowing the match officials to be held hostage for more than an hour after the fixture.

A further ₦2 million fine was imposed for the assault on the match officials, while an additional ₦250,000 was awarded as compensation to the affected assistant referee for the loss of personal items, damage to his mobile phone and medical treatment for the injury sustained.

However, the most significant punishment is the sporting sanction.

Three points and three goals will be deducted from Inter Lagos’ accrued points and goals as punishment for assaulting and causing injury to the first assistant referee.

The decision could have a direct impact on Inter Lagos’ position in the NPFL standings and potentially alter the club’s early-season campaign.

The sanctions underline the league authorities’ stance on the protection of match officials and the responsibility of home clubs to provide adequate security and ensure proper conduct throughout matchday operations.

Inter Lagos have been given 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.

The club will now have to decide whether to accept the disciplinary measures or challenge the ruling within the stipulated period, as the three-point and three-goal deduction threatens to become a major setback in their NPFL27 campaign.
