EuroMatch NPFL: “Clean tackles, sharp transitions, relentless energy” — Falolu shines on Rangers debut

Azeez Olamilekan Falolu made an impressive competitive debut for defending champions Rangers International, delivering a composed midfield performance as the Flying Antelopes fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Katsina United in their opening EuroMatch NPFL fixture in Abeokuta.

The 22-year-old midfielder brought energy and purpose to Rangers’ midfield, combining clean tackling, quick transitions and relentless running as the champions battled to avoid an opening-day defeat.

For Falolu, the occasion carried an added significance. After previously establishing himself with Katsina United, his move to Rangers created the unusual situation of facing his former club on his competitive debut for the defending champions. His transfer to Rangers was completed in August 2026.

And it was a debut that demanded character.

Rangers found themselves behind in the 38th minute when Luis Dadong capitalised on a defensive mistake to put Katsina United ahead. The champions pushed for a response but were frustrated for long periods by a disciplined Katsina side.

Falolu’s role became increasingly important as Rangers searched for control and a route back into the game. His ability to compete in midfield and move the ball forward provided another dimension to the champions’ response.

Reflecting on his first competitive appearance in the Rangers colours, Falolu kept his attention firmly on the long-term challenge ahead.

“The league is a marathon, not a sprint.”

For the midfielder, the words represent a personal reminder of the mentality he wants to carry throughout the season — staying focused, working harder in training and improving from one game to the next.

Rangers eventually found their equaliser in dramatic fashion, with right-back Chibueze Oputa scoring from a late free-kick to rescue a point in stoppage time.

The 1-1 result may not have been the perfect start for the defending champions, but for Falolu, the performance offered an encouraging first chapter in his Rangers career.

His debut also adds another compelling storyline to the EuroMatch NPFL: a player changing colours, stepping into the champions’ midfield and immediately finding himself involved in a high-pressure opening-day battle against his former employers.

At Katsina United, Falolu had already built a reputation as a versatile central midfielder. His previous NPFL experience includes playing in different midfield roles, while his performances had earned him recognition as a player capable of contributing both defensively and going forward.

Now, the challenge is different.

He is wearing the colours of the defending champions, where expectations are naturally higher and every performance will be judged against the demands of a title defence.

But if his opening appearance is anything to go by, Falolu has already shown the ingredients required for the challenge.

Clean tackles. Sharp transitions. Relentless energy.

And behind it all is a mindset built around patience, discipline and personal growth.

The EuroMatch NPFL season is only beginning, but Azeez Olamilekan Falolu has given Rangers supporters an early glimpse of what he could bring to the champions’ midfield.

The debut is done. The marathon has begun.
