In a remarkable display of raw talent and determination, Nigeria’s Esther Ifechukwu Nwankwo has qualified for the final of the U18 women’s 400m Hurdles at the ongoing African Junior Athletics Championships — in what is her first-ever outing in the event at a major international competition.
The 16-year-old student from New Era Girls Secondary School, Onitsha, only began hurdling earlier this year, yet showed poise and potential far beyond her experience as she stormed to a 2nd-place finish in her heat.

Nwankwo, who emerged as one of the standout performers at the MTN CHAMPS earlier this season in Uyo, earned her first national team call-up as a result of her performance — and is already proving to be one of Nigeria’s breakout stars at the championship.
Despite still fine-tuning her technique over the barriers, her composure and competitive spirit saw her through to the final, marking an impressive start to what could be a bright future in the hurdles for the young athlete.
While official results from her heat are yet to be released, her qualification adds to Nigeria’s growing medal hopes in the women’s events.
