Organisers of this weekend’s Enugu City Marathon have revealed special cash prizes that Nigerian competitors stand to go home with at the end of the event this Saturday, as the first placed indigenous runner across 42km will get N3m, while N1m will go to the 10km winner.
Sports247 gathered that, while elite international runners from abroad will be paid in dollars, with $15,000 going to the 42km winner, Nigerian competitors will be rewarded in Naira payments, for the top-five local athletes in both categories, to encourage interest in long distance running.

Meanwhile, as anticipation rises ahead of the race, Enugu State commissioner for sports, Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jnr described it as a very symbolic event that highlights the current administration’s vision of building a strong sporting cultiure for social development.
Ekweremadu pointed out that part of the process is the ongoing restoration of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, with the project now 82 per cent complete, ahead of the National Sports Festival, which he said is another part of the govenor’s vision.
The commissioner then called on the media, corporate organisations, sports stakeholders and the general public to partner with the state government in order to realise its targets, starting with Saturday’s marathon, towards building a legacy for Enugu as Nigeria’s latest sports hub.
He pointed out, “The restoration of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is another clear demonstration of the governor’s commitment to sports. We are rebuilding not just a stadium, but an important part of Enugu’s sporting history.
“Government cannot do this alone. We need the media, the corporate sector and other stakeholders to work with us. Together, we can achieve something truly significant and create a sporting legacy that will benefit Enugu for generations.”
