Sports247 reports that Kida was beaming gleefully all through the first phase of the talent hunt initiative, which drew more than 500 aspiring basketball players trying out in the programme that held simultaneously in Benin City, Lagos and Abuja.
Kida explained that the programme, which was basically a nationwide under-18 talent discovery and development venture, aims to identify and promote the next generation of Nigerian basketball players.
He expressed satisfaction with how the initiative attracted young players from across the country, with many of them seeking an opportunity to represent Nigeria and potentially showcase themselves further in future international competitions.
While pointing out that future stars of Nigeria’s male and female basketball national teams – D’Tigers and D’Tigress – will emerge from the initiative, Kida described the turnout as a strong indication of the country’s immense potential in the sport.
Kida added, “This is a landmark moment for basketball development in Nigeria. The overwhelming response to these tryouts demonstrates both the passion for the game and the abundance of talent that exists across our nation.
“Our vision is to create opportunities for every talented young Nigerian to be seen, evaluated and developed regardless of where they come from. These young athletes represent the future of Nigerian basketball.
“It is our responsibility to provide them with a pathway to achieve their dreams. Grassroots development is the foundation of sustainable success. By investing in talent identification, we are building D’Tigers and D’Tigress for years to come.”
