Emotional Homecoming as Gateway United Return to M.K.O Abiola sport arena for Crucial NNL Clash

After more than a year away, Gateway United are set for an emotional return to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Kuto, Abeokuta, this Saturday, June 7, in what could be a pivotal moment in their Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign.

The Matchday 21 clash against Osun United is more than just a fixture — it’s a symbolic homecoming for a side that has endured a nomadic season, playing home games in Ilaro and Ijebu Ode.

Now, as they face the final home test of the 2024/25 campaign, they do so on familiar soil and in front of their long-awaiting home fans.

Gateway United last played at the Kuto ground on April 13, 2024, in a goalless draw against Ikorodu City. Since then, logistical challenges have kept them on the road.

But with survival in the NNL still hanging in the balance, the club hopes the return to their spiritual home provides the lift they need.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Acting General Manager Niyi Soleye struck a hopeful tone, describing the return as a chance for emotional reconnection and a statement of resilience.

> “This is where the soul of the club resides,” Soleye said. “We’ve battled adversity all season, and coming back to Kuto isn’t just about football — it’s about reclaiming our identity.”

He urged supporters to fill the stands and turn the day into a celebration of football and community spirit.

With kick-off set for 3 p.m., the game promises high stakes and high emotion, as Gateway United look to draw energy from the home crowd to secure a vital result and edge closer to safety in Nigeria’s second-tier league.
