Team Nigeria’s Emmanuel Blessing delivered a statement performance on Day 2 of the African U18 & U20 Athletics Championships, setting the tone with a blazing Personal Best (PB) of 10.97s (-0.1) in the 100m event of the men’s Decathlon.
The 18-year-old athlete from Nigeria exploded out of the blocks at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, outrunning Algeria’s Ghettas Walid Fares, who came in second, and South Africa’s Dirk Coetzee, who placed third.

It was a defining moment for Nigeria in the combined events, as Emmanuel Blessing not only claimed maximum points for the 100m opener but also lit up the crowd with the first sub-11 second run of his career, underlining his promise as a multi-discipline contender on the continental stage.
“Starting strong gives me the mental boost for the rest of the events,” Blessing said post-race. “The crowd, the energy — everything just clicked today. This is for Nigeria.”
Blessing’s 10.97s time — despite a slight headwind of -0.1 — marked a crucial breakthrough and a significant leap forward in his progression chart. With nine events still to go in the decathlon, the Nigerian youngster now sits in a strong early position to challenge for overall podium honors.
Coaches and spectators alike have noted the maturity in his execution, with one national coach calling the performance, “a champion’s mindset unfolding before our eyes.”
Blessing’s victory helps build momentum for Nigeria as the host nation looks to assert dominance on home soil. With strong showings already recorded in the sprints and jumps, attention now turns to how the country’s young talents can sustain the medal charge across all disciplines.
The African U18 & U20 Championships, running through July 20th in Abeokuta, have attracted the best youth athletes from across the continent, and Day 2 has already delivered fireworks — with Emmanuel Blessing’s name now firmly in the spotlight.
