Egypt has reclaimed continental supremacy in squash after stunning Nigeria at the weekend to win the Africa Senior Squash Championship in Kampala, Uganda—ending Nigeria’s hold on the title and underscoring a decisive shift in regional power.
The headline battle came in the men’s team final, where Nigeria’s top seed, Olufunmilayo Gabriel, went toe-to-toe with his Egyptian counterpart in a gripping contest that ended 3–2 in favour of Egypt.

The victory triggered wild celebrations in the Egyptian camp, signalling not just a match won but a crown reclaimed.
For Nigeria, this year’s outing contrasted sharply with last year’s triumph, where they dominated the men’s and women’s team events as well as the men’s non-PSA category. This time, the defending champions had to settle for second place in both senior team categories, with Egypt taking full command across the board.
Egypt completed a near-clean sweep—winning the men’s singles, women’s singles, and both team events—cementing their return to the top of African squash. Their only slip came in the women’s non-PSA category, where Nigeria’s Rofiat Abdulazeez delivered a standout performance to defeat South Africa’s Helena Suzana Alleta 3–2 in a tense final, securing Nigeria’s lone gold of the tournament.
With Egypt back on the throne and Nigeria pushed to chase mode, the rivalry has officially been reignited, setting the stage for an even fiercer continental battle next year.
