Eguavoen Glad With Third Division Job In Greece

Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Augustine Eguavoen has stated delight with his ability to sign a deal with a third division club in Greece, Zakynthos, sports247.ng can report.

Although some critics have mocked the former defender for taking a team in the third tier league of Greece, instead of the top-flight Greek Super League, Eguavoen said he is happy to be confirmed as the club’s technical director and head coach in a season’s deal.

‘Egu’ disclosed further that the deal was initiated last season, but he finally reached a decision with the team last weekend, after extensive discussions with the club’s president.

Consequently, Eguavoen said his main target with his new club now is to ensure they gain promotion to the second-tier league from the third-ranking Gamma Ethniki.

Though Zakynthos have never played in the Greek Super League since their establishment in 1961, the team has a rich history of mid-class honours, which ‘Cerezo’ says is another motivation for him.

He, however, defied a reminder that the squad suffered a slump that saw them drop to the fourth-tier Delta Ethniki after a financial turmoil, but moved a step up last season.

Rather than take their previous slumps into account, Eguavoen said he is looking only at positives of the present and believes he can take them higher now that he is change.

Eguavoen declared: “I have seen them play. I watched an FA Cup match last week and the club won big.

“There are a few individually brilliant players and overall the team is good. We don’t want to be in the same league for more than a season.

“I like the flexibility of my role in the long term as technical director and head coach.”
