D’Tigers Crisis: Gombe Bulls Coach Warns Dave Fizdale Appointment May Not Help Home-Based Players

Gombe Bulls head coach Samson John has expressed concerns that the appointment of Dave Fizdale as D’Tigers head coach may not benefit home-based players because of the poor structure of Nigerian basketball.

Speaking on the future of the men’s national team, John argued that the absence of a functional local basketball league continues to limit the development of domestic players.

“Without a proper league, local players will struggle,” John said.

According to the Gombe Bulls coach, players cannot maintain competitive standards without regular high-level matches and structured development systems.

“You cannot develop properly without consistent competition,” he implied.

John also recalled previous situations where home-based players invited into national team camps struggled with basic drills compared to foreign-based professionals.

“Some players struggled because the structures were not good enough,” he noted.

The basketball coach stressed that the issue goes beyond the nationality or experience of the coach handling D’Tigers.

“The real problem is the system,” he added.

Despite welcoming Fizdale’s experience and NBA pedigree, John believes local basketball structures must improve before home-based players can realistically compete for national team places consistently.

“A strong league changes everything,” he stressed.

Nigeria’s basketball community continues debating the future direction of D’Tigers following the appointment of the former NBA coach.

“Development must start locally,” many basketball stakeholders believe.

For Samson John, the message is clear.

Nigeria needs a functional basketball league.

Local players need stronger structures.

And sustainable national team success depends on grassroots development.

Because elite national teams are difficult to build without a healthy domestic system.
