“Don’t Write Off Osimhen yet” – Gernot Rohr warns critics

Gernot Rohr is confident that Victor Osimhen will turn around his fortunes in Napoli after a lacklustre start to life in Italy by the Nigerian striker, Sports247 reports.

Osimhen joined the Serie A club from Lille last summer for a club record €70m fee.

The 22-year-old is yet to justify the huge sum and hype that surrounded his move, although his season has been hampered by a couple of injuries and a bout of Covid-19 in between.

The forward has just 2 goals from 16 appearances and his national team coach has jumped to his defense.

“Victor Osimhen’s season has so far been unlucky, between injuries and COVID,” Rohr told kisskissnapoli.it.

“Already in October he could not play with our national team for two games, in Austria, because he was in quarantine after some of his teammates at Napoli had contracted Covid.

“I spoke with the boy and he told me that he is physically and mentally fine. He is ready to return to the field with Napoli and also with the national team.

“You will soon see its real value. In the national team he is our point of reference for the attack. He has collected an important legacy in that role, that of Ighalo. In the next qualifying matches for the African Cup we hope to find him with great energy.”
