Former Super Falcons winger Stella Mbachu has appealed to Nigerians not to lose faith in the women’s national team following their stunning 3-2 defeat to Malawi in the opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The result, one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition, left the 10-time African champions under pressure in Group C, but Mbachu believes there is still no reason for panic.
Reacting to the disappointing start, the former Nigeria international admitted the defeat was painful but insisted the Super Falcons have the quality and experience to recover.
“It was a difficult result for everyone to accept, but this is not the time to give up on the team. The players need the support of Nigerians now more than ever,” Mbachu said.
The former winger expressed confidence that the Super Falcons can still qualify for the knockout stage and keep alive their hopes of defending their continental crown while securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“There is still everything to play for. The team can qualify for the next round and continue fighting for the title. I believe the players will learn from this defeat and respond strongly in the remaining matches,” she added.
Mbachu described the setback as an early wake-up call for the defending champions, noting that the growing standard of women’s football across Africa means no opponent can be underestimated.
Nigeria now heads into a crucial clash against Zambia, knowing that victory is likely to be essential to revive its campaign after the opening-day disappointment against the tournament debutants.
Despite the pressure surrounding the Super Falcons, Mbachu remains optimistic that the team has the character, resilience and championship mentality to overcome adversity and remain firmly in contention for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
