While describing this year’s turnout as far beyond expectations, Bamidele noted that the competition further showcased the academy’s efforts at spotting standout talents who have the potential to compete nationally and internationally.
The DCA boss, who also disclosed that the academy is already planning to stage an international classic tournament in the middle of this year, stressed that the ultimate aim of the institution is to groom talented chess players for the global stage.
Bamidele said, “Compared to the last edition where we had about 90 players, here we have over double, this marks explosive growth from the inaugural event’s mere 20 participants, to around 60 in the second, and 90 in the third.
“The surge reflects heightened awareness, parental support, school involvement, and backing from private organizations, transforming chess from a niche pursuit into a citywide passion across Ibadan and environs.
“We’ve seen players that can actually fight at the global level. Chess is a way of life and reveals a child’s temperament on the board like real life. Chess clubs should build interaction through young skills.”
Sports247 reports further that highlights of this year’s competition included victory for Omotunde Feranmi in the under-8 category, while Adio Daniel placed second and Adeniyi Adedunmoye emerged third.
Adaramola Michelle gained first spot in the under-12 class, followed by Aderoju Testimony in second and Adeniyi Adedunmola was third, while the under-16 cadre had Sambo Samson top of the board.
The under-16 category also had Olayode Goriola in second place and Ogunbayo Oluwafunminire third; with cash prizes going to the top performers, while all the 209 competing kids received certificates of participation.
