Diri’s Passion for Sports Behind Bayelsa’s Soaring Sporting Profile — Sir Braveman Wodi

Bayelsa State’s impressive rise in the Nigerian sports scene has been credited to the unwavering support and visionary leadership of Governor Douye Diri, according to Sir Braveman Wodi, Director of Sports, Bayelsa State Sports Council.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Sir Wodi described Governor Diri as the “driving force” behind the state’s consistent sporting excellence.

“Since he assumed office, Governor Diri has never looked back in funding sports. His passion is unmatched and has turned Bayelsa into a beacon of sports development in Nigeria,” Wodi stated.

The veteran sports administrator also emphasized the synergy within the leadership structure, noting that his collaboration with the Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, and the supervisory role of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has helped consolidate Bayelsa’s position as a sporting powerhouse.

“Everyone is working with a shared vision, and that has made our job a lot easier. From the top down, there is commitment — and the results are clear,” he added.

Wodi dismissed the notion that Bayelsa relies on athlete poaching, stressing instead the strength of homegrown talent, especially through initiatives like the “Bayelsa Future Aces Programme,” which aims to discover and nurture local athletes from the grassroots.

He highlighted the governor’s proactive approach in not only releasing funds but also ensuring the provision of world-class training facilities. “It’s not just about the money — it’s the environment he has created. That’s what sets us apart,” Wodi said.

Reflecting on Bayelsa’s performance at the National Sports Festival, Wodi commended the determination of athletes and coaches alike, despite narrowly missing out on the top spot.

“Our athletes gave it their all. The obstacles were there, but they showed grit and heart. That alone is a victory,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Wodi called on all stakeholders to draw lessons from the experience in Abeokuta and remain focused. “This is not the time to look back. We must dust off the shoes and march on — stronger, smarter, and more determined,” he concluded.

Bayelsa State continues to build on its sporting legacy, setting a standard for development-focused leadership and grassroots investment in youth and talent.
