In a strategic move to position Delta State as Nigeria’s leading destination for sports development, the Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading sports facilities across the state—starting with the Ughelli Stadium.
During a recent inspection tour of the Ughelli Stadium, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, revealed plans to revamp the stadium to match the ongoing transformation of the Warri City Stadium.
He was warmly received by the Chairman of the Ughelli Northern Football Council, Mr. Onome Ikrechero, alongside other stakeholders.
Oborevwori emphasized that the upgrade aligns with the state’s broader vision to develop world-class sports infrastructure capable of nurturing talent and hosting major competitions.
“We are not just rehabilitating stadiums; we are investing in the future of our youth and setting the stage for Delta State to become a beacon of sports excellence in Africa,” he said.
The development follows the comprehensive renovation of Warri City Stadium, which previously hosted prestigious events like the 2006 Women’s African Football Championship and the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
With plans underway to replicate such success in Ughelli and beyond, Delta State is on track to reclaim its legacy as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.
Beyond aesthetics, the government’s infrastructure push is expected to have far-reaching impact—boosting grassroots sports, attracting high-profile competitions, and offering local athletes the facilities needed to train at international standards.
