The Delta State Football Association (DFA) has praised the state’s female football team for their exceptional showing at the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, while also calling for renewed investment in developing a competitive male football side.
In a statement issued after an executive meeting held at the Football House in Asaba, DFA Chairman Honourable Godwin Adode described Team Delta’s overall performance as “dominating and impressive,” particularly commending the female footballers who clinched gold in their category.
“Our girls played with skill, discipline, and heart,” Adode said. “Their victory is not just a win for Delta, but a message that female football is thriving under the right leadership and support.”
The DFA also acknowledged the pivotal role of Honourable Onoriode Oborevwori, Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, crediting strategic planning and committed execution for the state’s continued dominance in national sports.
However, the football body used the occasion to highlight a pressing need: building a competitive male football team capable of representing the state in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
“The Governor’s commitment to sports through the MORE Agenda is evident,” Adode added. “But now is the time to channel some of that success into establishing a formidable male team. Delta has the talent — what we need is structure, support, and vision.”
Delta’s impressive medal haul further solidifies its reputation as Nigeria’s number one sporting state, but stakeholders believe there is more potential to unlock, especially in football.
The DFA concluded by reaffirming its commitment to grassroots talent development and pledged continued support for the state government’s sports-driven youth empowerment strategy.
As Delta basks in the glow of another National Sports Festival triumph, the call for a stronger male football presence serves as both a challenge and an opportunity for the state’s sports authorities.
