The National Division 1 & 2 Volleyball Championship in Umuahia ended on a high note, with Abuja’s Defense Spikers and Vipers Volleyball Club emerging champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively — capping off a week that symbolized not just competition, but the rebirth of volleyball in Nigeria.

At the Umuahia Township Stadium, the Defense Spikers sealed their dominance with an emphatic 3–1 victory over Life Camp Volleyball Club (25–15, 12–25, 25–15, 31–29), recording their eighth win in nine matches to lift the men’s title.

Ajase Ipo Volleyball Club from Kwara State also impressed, earning the second automatic promotion slot after winning seven of their nine games.

In the women’s division, Vipers and Partners Spikers of Abuja completed a perfect run, claiming victory in all nine games to secure the championship crown. The Federal Fire Service Spikers, also from Abuja, finished runners-up on set difference ahead of Team Abia, despite tying on points.

The grand finale attracted top dignitaries, including Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba; Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Mr. Raymond Ukwa; Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George; and the Vice President of the Volleyball Federation of Nigeria (VFN), who all commended the state’s commitment to sports development.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Commissioner Ananaba hailed the tournament as a “testament to Governor Alex Otti’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing sports in Abia State,” adding that the administration aims to make Abia a preferred destination for national and international sporting events.

The VFN Vice President equally lauded the state’s hospitality and organizational quality, noting that “with the passion and structure witnessed here, Abia is well on its way to hosting international volleyball championships.”

For Director of Sports, Comrade George, the championship’s success is a reflection of Governor Otti’s proactive leadership. “Abia is firmly back on Nigeria’s sports map,” he declared.

As the curtains closed on a week of fierce rallies and breathtaking spikes, the atmosphere in Umuahia spoke of more than victory — it echoed the resurgence of volleyball and the strengthening of Nigeria’s sporting spirit under a renewed drive for excellence.
