But it was James who held her nerve and kicked hard in the final 200 metres to fend off a fierce challenge from Mulero Adeyinka.
Adeyinka, known for her strong finishes, surged in the last stretch in a bid to snatch gold but had to settle for second place after a powerful finish by James. Rhoda Adisa came through to secure the bronze medal.
James’ performance is not just a personal milestone but a defining moment in her career, as she shattered the previous festival record and proved her readiness for the international stage.
“I’ve been working really hard for this moment,” an elated James said after the race. “Breaking my personal best and setting a festival record here in Abeokuta means everything to me.
I’m grateful to my coaches and everyone who believed in me.”
The women’s 800m has long been a showcase event at the festival, and this year’s edition delivered one of the most dramatic races in recent memory.
With this victory, James has positioned herself as one of the country’s rising stars in middle-distance running.
The National Sports Festival continues in Abeokuta, with more record-breaking performances expected as Nigeria’s finest athletes battle for glory and national pride.
