Cardoso Credits Respect and Preparation For Sundowns’ 5–1 Rout of Remo Stars in Abeokuta

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Miguel Cardoso, says his team’s emphatic 5–1 victory over Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League second-round first leg was built on respect and meticulous preparation for the Nigerian champions.

The South African powerhouse were in imperious form at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, asserting dominance from start to finish against a Remo Stars side making their debut at this stage of the competition.

Speaking after the match, Cardoso praised his players for executing their tactical plan perfectly, stressing that their approach stemmed from a genuine respect for the opposition.

“Actually, I didn’t believe we could score five goals. We respected Remo Stars, and that’s why we were able to score the goals we scored,” Cardoso said.

Sundowns opened the scoring early through Tashreeq Matthews, before Peter Shalulile doubled the lead before halftime. The second half saw Miguel Reisinho, Arthur De Oliveira, and Katlego Ntsabeleng add to the tally, sealing a commanding win.

Remo Stars managed a consolation through Samson Olasupo’s spectacular long-range strike in the 76th minute, but it was little relief for the home fans who witnessed their side unravel under relentless pressure.

With the second leg set for South Africa, Sundowns now have one foot in the group stage, while Remo Stars face an uphill task needing a near-miraculous turnaround to keep their continental dream alive.
