Nigeria’s Super Falcons have received a major financial boost ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a significant increase in the tournament’s prize money.
CAF confirmed on Wednesday that the winners of the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco will receive $2 million, representing a 100 per cent increase from the previous edition.
The continental football body also revealed that the competition’s total prize fund has risen by 67 per cent, from $3.475 million to $5.8 million, in what is another major step towards improving women’s football in Africa.
The runners-up will now earn $750,000, a 50 per cent increase, while the third-placed team will receive an improved cash reward, reflecting a 43 per cent increase.
In addition, all 16 participating nations, including defending champions Nigeria, will receive $150,000 as participation fees, up from $125,000 in the last edition.
CAF noted that since the current administration took office, the winner’s prize money has increased by 900 per cent, rising from $200,000 to $2 million, while the overall tournament prize fund has grown by 495 per cent, from $975,000 to $5.8 million.
The governing body also highlighted the continued expansion of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with the competition now featuring 16 teams, compared to eight teams in previous editions.
The 2026 WAFCON will take place in Morocco from July 26 to August 16, with Nigeria’s Super Falcons aiming to defend their crown and secure a record-extending 11th continental title.
The increased financial rewards are expected to further enhance the competitiveness of the tournament while providing greater support for the development of women’s football across Africa.
