Breaking: NPFL Set to End 10-Year Title Sponsor Drought As New Partner Unveiled in Abuja

The Nigeria Premier Football League is on the verge of ending a decade-long wait for a new title sponsor, with the league set to unveil its new commercial partner in Abuja on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The announcement is expected to become one of the biggest commercial developments in Nigerian domestic football in recent years and could mark another major milestone in the transformation being pursued by NPFL Chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye and his board.

The significance of Wednesday’s event becomes clearer when the history is considered.

The last major title sponsorship of the Nigerian top-flight league came from telecommunications giant Globacom, with the competition carrying the Glo Premier League identity. That partnership, which had lasted for more than a decade, officially ended in February 2016 after the completion of the 2016 Super Four competition.

Following Glo’s departure, the League Management Company announced that it would move away from the traditional single-title-sponsor model and instead pursue multiple sponsors across different categories.

The result was a prolonged period in which the NPFL operated without a conventional title sponsor.

Now, ten years later, that chapter could finally be coming to an end.

Recent reports indicate that Elegbeleye has confirmed negotiations for a major new commercial agreement, with the value reported at about ₦10.2 billion. The identity of the company, however, has not been officially revealed ahead of Wednesday’s unveiling.

For the NPFL, the timing could hardly be more important.

The league is preparing for a new season while simultaneously pursuing a broader commercial and digital transformation. Earlier this month, the NPFL officially announced its partnership with Murphy Ben International for YouTube streaming, with the league saying the arrangement will increase visibility, create new commercial opportunities for clubs and take NPFL football to fans around the world.

The combination of the two developments could signal a significant change in the way Nigerian domestic football is packaged and marketed.

The digital partnership addresses one of the league’s longstanding challenges — visibility — while a new title sponsor could provide another major financial and commercial pillar.

For clubs, a stronger title partnership could mean increased exposure, greater commercial value and potentially more opportunities to attract their own sponsors.

For players, a more commercially powerful league could mean greater visibility and a stronger platform for showcasing talent.

For fans, it could mean a better-funded competition with greater investment in presentation, promotion and engagement.

And for the NPFL itself, the return of a title sponsor would send a powerful message to the corporate world: Nigerian domestic football is open for serious business.

The league has already begun positioning itself as more than a matchday competition. Through the MBI partnership, the NPFL is looking to tell the stories of its clubs, players, coaches and supporters while reaching audiences beyond Nigeria.

Now, with the unveiling of a new title sponsor approaching, the commercial picture could become even bigger.

Wednesday’s ceremony in Abuja will therefore not simply be about revealing a company’s logo.

It could represent the return of a major corporate identity to the name of Nigeria’s top-flight league after a period of approximately ten years without a conventional title sponsor.

And that is why all eyes will be on Abuja.

Who is the company? How big is the deal? What will it mean for the clubs? And what does the partnership say about the future direction of the NPFL?

Those questions will be answered on Wednesday.

For Elegbeleye and the NPFL board, it could be another defining moment in their drive to make the league more visible, commercially attractive and sustainable.

The NPFL has already opened a new digital door with Murphy Ben International.

Now, it appears the league is preparing to open another major commercial door.

After 10 years, the wait may finally be over.

On Wednesday, August 26, Abuja will reveal the company that could put its name back on Nigerian top-flight football.
