The country’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games was unsuccessful, with India’s city of Ahmedabad officially awarded the hosting rights for the centenary edition of the Games.

In a further blow, Nigeria has also missed out on the hosting rights for the 2031 African Games, losing the bid to Uganda, despite strong ambitions to bring the event back to the country for the first time since 2003.

The twin setbacks mark another challenging moment for Nigeria’s sports administration, as efforts to position the country as a major destination for global and continental sporting events continue to face stiff competition.

Officials are yet to issue a comprehensive response, but the focus is expected to shift toward future bidding opportunities and ongoing sports development initiatives.

More information expected in the coming days.
