Team Nigeria has announced its arrival in spectacular fashion at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, producing a breathtaking gold and silver sweep in the Women’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting event at the SEC Armadillo.
Leading the charge was Esther Nworgu, who delivered a phenomenal lift of 119.0kg to not only win the gold medal but also set a new Commonwealth Games Record (GR) in a stunning display that brought the arena to its feet.
To complete a memorable outing for Nigeria, compatriot Esther Oyema claimed the silver medal with a best lift of 115.5kg, ensuring the Green and White dominated the podium in one of the country’s strongest events.
England’s Olivia Broome settled for the bronze medal after lifting 106.6kg, while Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki, England’s Charlotte McGuinness, and India’s Suman Devi finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The remarkable double podium comes just moments after Roland Ezuruike won Nigeria’s first medal of the Games with silver in the Men’s Lightweight event, taking Team Nigeria’s tally to three medals on the opening day—one gold and two silver.
