Brave Ten-Man Osun United Stay Top After Dramatic Late Equalizer Against Crown FC

Osun United held their nerves and showed true grit to snatch a vital point in a pulsating 1-1 draw against Crown FC in their second Group B game of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoff at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

Despite going a man down early in the second half, the Gladiators showed great resilience, with Abolude Nurudeen converting a dramatic last-minute penalty to keep Osun United top of the group with four points and on course for a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) ticket.

The match began with Crown FC showing urgency, pressing high and creating several early chances. Their pressure paid off just before the hour mark when Wasiu Falolu broke the deadlock with a brilliant strike that beat Osun United goalkeeper Ayo Ojo.

Moments later, Osun United were dealt a major blow as Lekan Gabriel received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the team with 10 men and their promotion dreams hanging in the balance.

However, Head Coach Seye Ajayi responded decisively, making bold tactical substitutions that turned the tide. The introduction of Paul Agbor, Gafar Olafimihan, Naheem Odugbemi, and Mojeed Abimbola injected fresh energy into the squad.

The reward came deep into stoppage time when Osun United won a penalty, coolly converted by Abolude Nurudeen to secure a point and preserve their unbeaten run in the playoff.

Speaking after the game, Coach Ajayi commended his players’ character and fighting spirit. “We need to re-evaluate ourselves and reignite our drive, but I’m proud of the team. A point at this stage, especially under the circumstances, is worth celebrating.”

Osun United now face Kun Khalifat FC in their final group game, needing just a draw to confirm their place in the 2024/25 NPFL season.
