Former champions Bayelsa Queens FC have fired the first shot ahead of the 5th West Africa Football Union (WAFU Zone B) Championship, releasing a 25-player provisional squad under the guidance of head coach Whyte Ogbonda as preparations intensify for the regional showdown in Côte d’Ivoire this August.
The Prosperity Girls, who famously lifted the title in 2022, are aiming to reclaim their dominance in West African women’s football when the tournament kicks off on Saturday, August 9, through Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Leading the roster are defensive stalwarts Blessing Ilivieda (captain) and Jennifer Oliver, both crucial to the team’s backline resilience and tournament experience. Their leadership will anchor a squad that blends battle-tested veterans with promising new faces across all positions.
“We’ve selected a balanced squad to compete strongly. This is a championship we’ve won before, and we’re going there with intent and hunger,” said Coach Whyte Ogbonda, who emphasized tactical discipline and unity as core themes for the 2025 campaign.
Squad Highlights: Experience Meets Emerging Talent
In goal, Monle Omini, Linda Jiwuaku, Agatha Thompson, and Sylvia Echefu will vie for the No. 1 shirt, each bringing depth to a competitive position.
The defensive line features a mix of power and precision, with Florence Alexander, Otega Okoko, and Semilore Bumi expected to provide width and control, while newcomers like Chinyere Iheoma and Sefiat Idris look to make their mark.
In midfield, the creative engine includes Mary Aderemi, Dooshima Tarnum, and Bankole Sofiat, with the versatile Chiamaka Ezekwugo and Kafayat Mafisere offering tactical flexibility.
The attacking front is loaded with pace and flair, as Janet Akekoromowei, Shakirat Moshood, and Emem Essien headline a goal-hungry strike force. Alaba Olabiyi, Ifeanyi Kindness, and Delight Issac round out a forward line capable of punishing any defense in the sub-region.
Legacy and Expectations
Having been crowned champions in 2022, Bayelsa Queens enter the tournament as both a threat and a benchmark. But with increased competition and evolving tactics across the region, the 2025 edition promises to be a stiffer challenge.
“We’re aware of the expectations. It’s not just about showing up, it’s about showing up with purpose,” said a senior team official. “The players understand the weight of the jersey — this is more than football; it’s Bayelsa pride.”
The final 20-player squad is expected to be announced in early August, following a two-week intensive training camp in Yenagoa.
As eyes turn to Côte d’Ivoire, Bayelsa Queens FC are making one thing clear: they’re not just going to compete — they’re going to conquer.
