The athletics events at the ongoing African Youth Games in Angola got underway with promising performances from Team Nigeria, headlined by Emmanuel Akolo’s impressive outing in the Boys’ 100m heats.

Akolo, Nigeria’s sole entrant in the sprint event, won Heat 3 with a time of 10.74s, securing the third-fastest qualification time overall. His confident run places him firmly in contention as the competition advances.
South Africa’s rising star Micah Africa set the benchmark for the day, dominating Heat 1 in 10.59s to finish as the fastest qualifier. Gambia’s Bayo Buba followed closely, powering to victory in Heat 2 with a time of 10.62s.
With Akolo’s strong start and Nigeria’s contingent also featuring in the 400m and other Day 1 events, hopes are high for podium finishes as the championships progress.
