Former Golden Eaglet striker Taiwo Awoniyi, has expressed desire to remain at Liverpool and fight for a spot in their first team, according to Liverpool official website.
The 22-year-old striker believes he has improved greatly at Mainz and hopes the Jurgen Klopp-led Liverpool technical crew will notice he is not the same player he was in the last couple years.
The Nigeria International who previously played on loan at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron and KAA Gent since joining Liverpool in 2015, scoredhis first Bundesliga goal in last week’s 2-2 draw against Cologne and is looking to score more goals as he makes meals of the scanty playing opportunities. “Coming here is just to make myself better. Even without playing for a while, coming in on Sunday just really shows I’ve really improved since coming to Germany. That’s the goal with being on loan. I don’t think I’m the same player as I was in the last few years. I personally have seen improvement in my game and I believe most Liverpool coaches have seen that as well,” he said.
The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup winner added: “Even when you are not playing, you just have to be ready and keep on improving yourself and wait for your time as well. ” I just have to be prepared to improve myself and work on my weak points as well. When I’m back at Liverpool, I hope they will see that.
Awoniyi rained praises on the gaffer of Liverpool, saying the champions league winning coach has had a lot of influence on the team “He’s more than a legend here. Everyone is so grateful for all he achieved for the club. The love they have for him at the club is unexplainable.
Awoniyi, who is looking to impress his parent club when Mainz host host fourth-place RB Leipzig later today added: “When I came to the club, I was seeing a lot of stuff that I’ve seen in Liverpool as well. I believe it’s just more of the same impact and the same process. I believe they are still living on the legacy.”
Though Awoniyi is uncapped at the senior international level but has represented Nigeria at U17, U20 and U23 levels, winning the U17 World Cup in 2013 and was a member of the Nigeria team to 2016 Olympic Games.
