A flood of plaudits is still rolling in favour of fast-rising female referee, Folashade Ekun (aka Standard), following her graduation from Lagos State University (LASU), where she was the institution’s Students’ Union Government’s 36th secretary of sports.
Sports247 reports that accolades flew left, right and centre for Ekun after she graduated as part of LASU’s 30th set during a well-attended convocation on August 18th, with observers reciting how she combined her academics with active duties as an elite football referee.
The diploma graduate in Physical & Health Education (PHE) at LASU also got involved fully in campus politics and still found extra energy to perform actively as captain of the university’s women’s football team, which she led to many glorious moments at home and abroad.
Her most oustanding achievement with the football team was leading them to the 2025 World University Games in Dalian, China, where she emerged as one of the global competition’s most oustanding players, which earned her several awards at the venue and back home in Lagos.
Ekun was also an executive committee member in LASU’s chapter of Nigeria Association Of Physical Health Education Recreation Sports Dance (NAPHER-SD), a honourable member of 39th NAPHER-SD and the university’s 40th IEC chairperson.
An Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) generated citation for the lady of several awards and organiser of Standard Football Championship noted in part, “Ekun is widely recognised as one of the best young female referees officiating in Nigeria’s elite football leagues.
“She balanced her rising career in sports arbitration with her academic pursuits in the Physical and Health Education unit of LASU’s department of Human Kinetics Sports and Health Education (HKSHE).
“She made history by becoming only the second woman to ever occupy the position of LASU-SU Sports Director. She initially secured the leadership role in July 2025 after running unopposed, pulling a staggering 3,446 votes.
“Throughout her tenure, she changed the dynamics of sports within LASU, driving engagement and raising athletic programmes to an enviable height. Having passed her recent national fitness tests, Ekun remains a fast-rising figure in the Nigerian football league.”
Sports247 gathered further that this year’s edition of Ekun’s Standard U-10 Cup, which happens to be tthe sixth installment, will commence this Sunday at Gbaga Pitch, Ikorodu, with eight teams set to lock horns in the grassroots competition that promotes kiddies football.
