Nigerian-born youngster, Chinonyerem Annabelle Chukwu justified her pre-competition rating by netting a 52nd minute goal for Canada on the opening day of the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Sports247 reports that Chukwu’s goal on Saturday took Canada close to a famous win over England, until Rachel Matlby equalised with a penalty kick in the 89th minute of the pulsating encounter.

Heading into the competition, Chukwu had been cited among an array of highly promising female footballers who are expected to twinkle during this year’s competition in the East European nation.
The 19-year-old attacker, who has already featured for Canada’s senior women’s team, headed to Poland on the strength of her soaring form in college soccer, where she plays for Notre Dame Fighting Irish university squad in United States of America.
Though she was born to Nigerian parents in England, the family moved to Ottawa, Ontario in Canada in 2016 and she began playing youth soccer with Ottawa South United in 2017, after she was spotted during a school tournament and was invited to try out for the team.
Four years later, she helped Ottawa South United win the U-14 Girls OPDL Gary Miller Charity Shield, then joined the NDC Ontario programme in August 2022 and scored her first collegiate goal in the season opener against Michigan State Spartans on August 15th, 2024.
Okonkwo was in Canada’s team for the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and got her debut as a substitute against France, against who she scored her first goal in a 1-1 draw, following which she was invited to the senior side at age 15, for friendlies against Brazil in November 2022.
The following year, Chukwu was in Canada’s team for the 2023 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship and scored twice in extra time of the third place match for a 5-3 win that gave them bronze and a ticket for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
In September 2024, she got another senior team callup for the CONCACAF Olympic Games qualification play-offs, then set the Canadian record for most goals scored in national youth team matches with her 28th career strike in 34 appearances.
Her lethal form was noted in a preview by fifa.com, which predicted that Canada will rely on Chukwu’s skills, ability and goals to pull off a long awaited conquest of the Female Youth Mundial, having reached the 2002 final when they hosted the maiden edition.
A citation for her stated in part, “The superstar forward is also taking part in her third major global tournament following appearances in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 and the previous edition of the U-20 event in Colombia two years ago.
“Aged 19, Chukwu has already impressed at the senior level, after scoring a brace against Zambia in the FIFA Series 2026, and will be looking to once again catch the eye of senior coach, Casey Stoney ahead of Canada’s qualification bid for Brazil 2027 (FIFA Women’s World Cup).”
