Chairman of the Delta State Athletics Association, Itiako Malik Ikpokpo, has described the impressive turnout at the 2026 Commonwealth Games Trials in Lagos as a major boost for the future of athletics in Nigeria.
Ikpokpo believes the strong participation from states across the country is evidence that grassroots athletics development is beginning to yield positive results.
“The turnout has been very encouraging,” Ikpokpo said.
The Delta athletics boss noted that athletes from several states competed at the trials, reflecting the growing commitment of state associations to talent development.
According to him, while athletics may not yet command the same level of public attention as football, the sport continues to make significant progress.
“Athletics may not enjoy football’s popularity, but the growth is there for everyone to see,” he added.
Ikpokpo stressed that continued investment in grassroots competitions remains essential if Nigeria is to produce the next generation of elite athletes.
He pointed to the emergence of young talents from state programmes as proof that local development structures are working.
“When states invest in grassroots sports, they create future champions for the country,” he stated.
Nigeria has long been one of Africa’s athletics powerhouses, producing world and Olympic medallists across several disciplines, and Ikpokpo believes sustained support for grassroots programmes will ensure that legacy continues for years to come.
