Athletics: ‘Becoming National Champion Was My Mission’ — Favour Ashe Sets Sights On Commonwealth Games Medal

Newly crowned Nigeria men’s 100 metres champion Favour Ashe has revealed that winning the national title was one of his biggest ambitions this season after producing a stunning performance at the Commonwealth Games Trials.

The sprinter stormed to victory in Lagos with a personal best of 9.93 seconds, underlining his status as one of Nigeria’s fastest men ahead of a busy international campaign.

“One of my major goals this year was to become Nigeria’s national champion, and I’m grateful that I’ve achieved it,” Ashe said.

The sprint star credited months of hard work, discipline and faith for helping him realise his dream of standing on top of the podium.

According to Ashe, the achievement is only the beginning of what he hopes will be a memorable season.

“I’ve worked hard, prayed for this moment and I’m happy everything has come together,” he added.

With the national title secured, Ashe says his attention has now shifted to the European circuit, where he plans to continue sharpening his form ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

The Nigerian sprinter believes competing against world-class opposition will prepare him for the challenges ahead.

“My focus now is on the competitions in Europe before the Commonwealth Games,” he stated.

Despite his impressive performance at the trials, Ashe insists his biggest objective this year remains standing on the podium at the Commonwealth Games.

“My target is to win a medal for Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

The 9.93-second run not only secured Ashe the national title but also reinforced his credentials as one of Nigeria’s leading medal hopefuls as Team Nigeria intensifies preparations for the Games.
