Entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked player among the stellar field of the world’s top 16, Aruna had already defied expectations by triumphing over the fifth-ranked Brazilian, Hugo Calderano, in a spectacular fashion on Wednesday. The victory fueled hopes that the Nigerian sensation could orchestrate a major upset in the competition.

However, facing the relentless prowess of Zhendong proved to be a daunting challenge for the African table tennis maestro. In a match characterized by intense rallies and powerful shots, Aruna fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to the Chinese juggernaut in three straight sets, with scores of 11-6, 11-9, 11-4.

Despite Aruna’s previous four consecutive losses to Zhendong, some optimists held onto the belief that he could replicate his earlier upset. Nevertheless, Zhendong, the reigning champion, demonstrated his superior experience and firepower to secure the first quarterfinal victory of the tournament.

Zhendong, vying for his second consecutive WTT Finals title after claiming the Men’s Singles trophy in 2021, showcased why he is considered the world’s best. Aruna’s aspiration to make history as the first African player to reach the semifinals at the WTT Finals came to a halt, echoing his quarterfinal exit in the previous edition of the tournament in 2021.

Although the journey ended in the quarterfinals for Aruna Quadri, his remarkable performance and spirited effort against the world’s elite players have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the prestigious WTT Finals in Doha.
