The president of the Aquatics Federation of Nigeria (AqFN), Lekan Fatodu, has expressed delight at the ability of the body’s present board to keep alive the memories of their immediate past boss, the late Dunkwu Chamberlain, whose youth development policies they are continuing.
Sports247 reports that Fatodu expressed this much while speaking during the federation’s recent National Swimming Talent Hunt Competition, which he described as a significant initiative aimed at discovering and nurturing the next generation of aquatic stars for the country.
While stressing that AqFN is committed to making the talent-hunt programmed a permanent feature, Fatodu acknowledged that the competition was part of the legacy established by Chamberlain, whose vision was to use swimming to promote unity and empower young Nigerians.
“This is very important to me because it is one of the outstanding events that continues the legacy of our immediate past president, Dunkwu Chamberlain. His mission was to ensure that we give our young people an opportunity to have a future in swimming.
“I believe it is important that this dream does not die. By giving these young people opportunities, we are not only helping them in sports; we are also contributing to their academic development, social interaction and sense of responsibility in society.
“We are committed to driving this initiative and ensuring that a programmed like this becomes a permanent feature of our sporting calendar. We want to discover talents early, develop them properly and give them the platform to compete at the highest level.
“We must acknowledge the role of parents. The fact remains that swimming is an expensive sport, and what we need is commitment from government, the federation, parents and other stakeholders,” Fatodu concluded.
Sports247 reports further that Fatodu also expressed satisfaction that awareness of swimming is growing in Nigeria and urged people from all walks of life to fully support the aquatic discipline across the country.
