Algeria Apologise to DR Congo “Statue Supporter” After AFCON Celebration Sparks Backlash

Football can turn from poetry to pain in a single heartbeat. On one such night at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, joy for Algeria became heartbreak for DR Congo — and a moment of celebration ignited a storm of emotion across the continent.

Algeria’s dramatic Round of 16 victory over the Leopards was sealed deep into extra time, a crushing 119th-minute strike that silenced millions of Congolese fans worldwide.

It was a goal that ended DR Congo’s spirited AFCON journey against expectations, leaving anguish where hope had stood for nearly two hours.

Among those shattered was Lumumba — the iconic Congolese “statue supporter” whose presence had become one of the tournament’s most powerful images.

Match after match, he stood motionless throughout DR Congo games, a living monument honouring independence hero Patrice Lumumba.

Against Algeria, he remained frozen for 119 relentless minutes.
When the final blow came, the statue cracked.

Lumumba could not hold back his tears as his nation’s dream slipped away, a raw moment of grief that quickly went viral and touched hearts across Africa and beyond.
But amid the emotional aftermath, controversy followed.

In the heat of celebration, Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura was seen mimicking Lumumba’s statue pose, an act many viewers deemed insensitive given the supporter’s visible anguish.

The reaction was swift and divided. While some dismissed it as adrenaline-fuelled exuberance, many condemned the gesture as disrespectful, prompting widespread backlash on social media.

Recognising the gravity of the moment, the Algerian Football Federation moved quickly to defuse tensions.

In a public show of remorse and sportsmanship, the federation issued an apology and dispatched a convoy to escort Lumumba to the Marriott Hotel, where he met with members of the Algerian squad.

The gesture was widely seen as an effort to heal wounds, reaffirming the principles of respect and fair play that AFCON organisers have consistently championed throughout the tournament.

AFCON 2025 has once again highlighted football’s unique power — not just as a game, but as a stage where history, culture, emotion and identity collide.

As the tournament rolls into the quarter-finals, Algeria now turn their focus to a heavyweight clash against Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Saturday, with a thrilling lineup of last-eight battles scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Yet long after the final whistle, the image of a man standing still for 119 minutes — and finally breaking — will remain one of AFCON 2025’s most unforgettable moments.
