Akwa United unveil new players ahead of NPFL season

Akwa United have unveiled 12 new players ahead of the 2018/19 season, in a bid to strengthen their squad and challenge for the league title.

 

The players were presented before the fans, stakeholders and the media community, in a ceremony held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday.

 

NPFL record goal scorer in a single season (23), Mfon Udoh returned to the club for a second stint, after seeing out his contract with Enyimba FC of Aba.

 

Brazil 2014 World Cup star, Juwon Oshaniwa joined as a free agent, while Rio 2016 Olympics Bronze medallist, Ndifreke Effiong switched from Umuahia-based club, Abia Warriors.

The Promise Keepers also acquired the services of Homebased Eagles midfielder, Emeka Atuloma and defender, Markson Ojobo from neighbours, Rivers United.

Others are Cameroonian goalkeeper, Jean Efala (Colombe), experienced forward, Ocheme Edoh (Wikki Tourists), Akwa Starlets duo Samuel Akpan and Wisdom Fernando and FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s trio of Wilson Elu, Alberico Da Silva and Adou Blaise.

Former Cofine FC coach, Daniel Japhet and Brazilian match performance analyst, Israel José Lira have been added to the Rafael Everton led technical crew.

The unveiled players and coaches have been involved in the club’s five preseason friendlies, under the new head coach, Rafael Everton, since the Brazilian took over from Abdu Maikaba on November 5, 2018.

Twelve players were also released to pave way for the new signings.

Former vice captain Emmanuel Ariwachukwu has since teamed up with Sudanese side, Al Hilal, while forward, Victor Mbaoma rejoined Remo Stars at the end of last season.

Others players who have left the club are Gabriel Wassa, Aminu Nuhu, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Ismail Shagari, Haggai Katoh, Ifeanyi Ede, Matthew Boniface, Ayobami Asekunowo, Kelly Kester, and Adeshina Gata.

The club will host El-Kanemi Warriors in the 2018/19 NPFL season’s opener on Sunday, January 13.
