The director-general of sports in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State, McAnthony Anuforo Amaelechukwu has called on grassroots football coaches and players to take their health seriously.
Amaelechukwu, who is also the director of Peakline Sports World Limited, stated this in an exclusive interview with Sports247 during a friendly match in honour of late Coach Osahon Emokpae at Agboju Grammar School, opposite FESTAC Town 2nd Gate, Lagos.
While pouring lofty words and encomiums on Coach Osahon for his selfless service to youth football in Ojo and Badagry, as well as Lagos State in general, Amaelechukwu noted that the late gaffer did not seek support early enough to battle the ailment that led to his death.
Amaelechukwu went on to admit that God’s grace ultimately determines longevity in life, but stressed that no one should take health matters with levity, especially people who are involved in sports activities.
“Your health should be taken seriously. That’s why I advise everyone to go for regular check-ups. Unfortunately, Osahon was somebody who felt relaxed, even when he was suffering an ailment.
“I feel he could have survived had it been detected early and tackled seriously at the right time. It’s true that nobody can question God, but I urge all coaches and players out there, take your health seriously.
“If you notice any ailment in your body, any little thing that does not feel right in your system, start working on it quickly and ensure you get it treated properly.
“Early treatment of any ailment will help you to continue to show the world who you are in football and other sports,” Amaelechukwu posited with a tone of supplication.
