Aina Makes Gruelling Return as Injury Rust Shows in Forest Defeat

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Sunday, ending a 127-day absence, as he featured in Forest’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa.

Aina had been sidelined for nearly three months after suffering a serious hamstring injury during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa on September 9, 2025.

The injury required surgery and an extended rehabilitation period, ruling him out of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and keeping him away from first-team action until this week.

Cleared fit by Forest manager Sean Dyche, the Nigerian international was handed a starting berth, thrown straight into the intensity of Premier League football after limited minutes with the club’s Under-21 side.

It was a bold call, driven by Forest’s defensive struggles in his absence and the need for his experience at right-back.

However, Aina’s return proved a stern reminder of the gap between recovery fitness and match sharpness. Aston Villa, eager to bounce back from a recent defeat, dominated proceedings, repeatedly targeting Forest’s defensive flanks. Aina, still managing the physical and mental demands of a long layoff, endured a difficult afternoon as Villa applied relentless pressure.

Forest conceded before the break, exposing a stretched backline, and matters worsened shortly after halftime when another Villa attack ended in the net. Despite his effort to track runners and maintain defensive shape, Aina struggled to cope with the tempo and intensity of the contest.

Dyche withdrew the Nigerian defender in the 69th minute, replacing him with Nicolo Savona — a decision that reflected both Aina’s fitness level and the tactical demands of the game. He finished with an average performance rating, a fair reflection of a player still shaking off months of competitive inactivity.

While the outing highlighted the challenges of returning amid a team under pressure, Aina’s comeback remains a significant boost for Nottingham Forest as they navigate a demanding stretch of fixtures.

With more minutes and match rhythm, the defender is expected to regain sharpness and re-establish himself as a key figure in Forest’s fight for stability.
