Adeyosoye’s Late Strike Rescues Sunshine Stars Against Abia Comets

Sunshine Stars preserved their unbeaten home record in the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) season after a dramatic 1–1 draw against Abia Comets on Matchday Six at the Akure Sports Complex.

The Owena Whales were moments away from a painful defeat before defensive midfielder Bismark Adeyosoye emerged as the unlikely hero, rifling home an emphatic 88th-minute equaliser just seconds after the visitors had stunned the home crowd by taking the lead.

Sunshine Stars, playing at home for the third time this campaign, started on the front foot and dominated early proceedings.

However, they were repeatedly denied by Abia Comets goalkeeper Moses Akams, who delivered an inspired performance. Akams produced three outstanding saves within the opening 15 minutes and followed up with several crucial interventions to frustrate the hosts well into the second half.

Against the run of play, Abia Comets finally broke the deadlock in the 87th minute, when Usman Garba capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home, briefly silencing the Akure crowd and putting the visitors on the brink of a famous away victory.

But Sunshine Stars showed resilience and character in their response. From a well-worked set-piece just outside the box, Michael Olalusi laid the ball into the path of Adeyosoye, whose thunderous strike flew into the top left corner, restoring parity and sparking celebrations among the home supporters.

Speaking after the game, Sunshine Stars head coach Olanrewaju Ale admitted his side momentarily switched off for the conceded goal but applauded his players for their fighting spirit.

“We lost concentration for a moment, and we paid for it, but the reaction from the players was excellent. Their character and belief kept us in the game,” Ale said.

Abia Comets head coach Dipreye Teibowei expressed satisfaction with the result, praising his team’s organisation and discipline.

“We came here with a clear plan and executed it well. We were very close to taking all three points, but a draw away from home is still a good result,” he noted.

The draw leaves Sunshine Stars still unbeaten at home this season, while Abia Comets will take confidence from another solid away performance in Conference A.
